Holistic Skin Care. What Is It?

You may have heard of “Holistic Skin Care”. But what is it and does it have a specific meaning?

There is mainstream skin care, or mainstream skin care products, and then there is the “other” skin care regimes. If you’ve been looking at skin care and anti aging products for a while you’ll probably come across “natural skin care”, “holistic skin care”, “organic skin care”, “botanical skin care” and probably some others that you can list.

What do these mean, and is there any difference?

The bottom line is that there are no formal definitions of holistic skin care or botanical skin care or any other skin care regime. They mean what you think they mean.

Just as there’s no real definition of “skin care” or “anti aging” or any of the other terms used in the skin care industry.

So we can’t give you formal definitions pointing out the differences between holistic skin care and natural skin care, for example, if there are any.

However although there are no formal definitions of holistic skin care, for example, that doesn’t mean that it doesn’t really exist.

Generally “holistic” refers to the interconnection between the mind and the whole body. That the health of the body is not just a function of one particular part of the body, say the kidneys for example, but that our health is a function of it all.

All our body, and our mind. That the health of one part of our body affects the health of another part of our body.

We have for some time been writing about this in our blog. Although we haven’t, to date, mentioned our philosophy as “holistic” it would be fair to say that that’s a fair description of our philosophy.

That the condition of our skin, be it healthy or unhealthy, is a reflection of the health of our whole body.

That you can’t have beautiful skin on an unhealthy body. That you can’t combat aging skin conditions by using great skin care products without also looking at other factors, for example your diet. Or making sure you get enough exercise.

Holistic skin care focuses on a total philosophy of wellness, that to achieve wellness in any part of our lives, including great looking healthy skin, we need to focus on overall wellbeing and health, not just skin care. Read the rest of this entry

(And make sure you read our page about Natural Skin Care, it's quite an eye opener about modern skin care products.)

The ingredients of skin care products is a hot issue. What are all natural skin care ingredients?

Gradually consumers are beginning to realize that the ingredients of skin care products (and cosmetics and other facial and beauty and body care products as well) are not necessarily that good for you.

We’ve talked about this before. About how tests have found lead in lipsticks, about phthalates in skin care products and parabens in skin care products. About how many teenage girls have elevated hormone levels linked to the cosmetics they use.

Gradually consumers are realizing that mainstream skincare products areĀ  not necessarily that good for you, and most don’t work. They don’t work because the skin care companies use chemical ingredients that are cheap, instead of natural and organic ingredients that cost a lot more but are safe and work better.

Natural skin care ingredients are much safer for a number of reasons. Firstly they are derived directly from such places as plants, seaweed and the wool of sheep. Many are classed as organic and are even certified organic ingredients.

This alone doesn’t guarantee that these all natural skin care ingredients are safe. There can be numerous “natural” substances that are quite dangerous.

However the company that makes the best natural skin care products in the world actively guarantees that their products are made from natural ingredients that are proven to be safe. How can they guarantee this?

By signing the Compact For Safe Cosmetics Pledge.

This is a pledge that a company can sign with the Campaign For Safe Cosmetics that pledges the company to use only known safe ingredients in their skin care products and other body care products.

So any company can objectively evidence their commitment to product safety.

And product quality, because natural skin care ingredients work way better than chemical ingredients, but because they’re much more expensive the big brands won’t use them.

What are these ingredients found in natural anti aging products and organic skin care products? Ingredients like Aloe Vera gel and extracts from the Japanese seaweed Phytessence Wakame, known for centuries for it’s skin health properties.

Or how about extracts from the wool of sheep that actually help your skin replace it’s own collagen and elastin supplies.

Or how about Babassu oil from the nut of the Babassu tree with magical moisturizing qualities.

You get the idea, the best natural skin care products in the world list every single ingredient in their products at their website, including what it is and why it’s good for your skin.

If natural skincare ingredients are more expensive why aren’t these products very expensive? (They’re actually quite cheap)

Because the company doesn’t spend megabucks on TV advertising with megastars that don’t use the products. They don’t advertise at all, so you may well have never heard of them. But their products are stunningly effective, and they’re guaranteed with a money back guarantee.

See if the company that makes the products you use now has signed the pledge or offers a money back guarantee. Read the rest of this entry
